We know that women-founded companies demonstrate 35% better returns and 2x more revenue per dollar invested than their male counterparts, yet these entrepreneurs continue to face significant challenges when raising capital. Capita3's Leader Programs help these founders grow as executives and operators, increase their ability to raise capital, and drive start-up growth and performance.
Tailwinds:
While there has been stagnation or decline of female founders as a percentage of overall founders, female founders are growing as a percentage of founders in healthtech and med devices (Technical.ly, Carta)
Interest is growing in 'fem-tech' as a $100B+ industry and there was a 1000% growth in start-ups in this space over the last 10 years ( Technical.ly)
As the overall market warms up - with interest rate decreases and a cautious opening of IPOs and M&A, investors are expressing a willingness to release more funding to companies outside of their current portfolios, particularly in healthcare and in female-founded companies (Forbes, Hubspot)
Headwinds:
Overall, VC backing for female startup CEOs has remained stagnant over the last 16 years; in the first half of 2024, women received 2.2% of all capital invested in venture-backed start-ups, a decline from a 2.8% peak in 2009 (Technical.ly). It's even more challenging for women of color, who receive only 0.5% of all VC financing.
There's been a 2 percentage point rise in the portion of pre-seed and seed funding going to female-founded start-ups from 2015 to 2024 (5% to 7%); however, by the Series B round, share of venture capital dollars declined from 2% to 1% (NYT) in the same period.
